What Makes Ngorongoro So Special?
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to one of Africa’s true wonders, the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera. It was formed when a giant volcano collapsed in on itself around 2–3 million years ago, leaving behind a crater floor of roughly 260 km² that holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife found anywhere on the continent
Unlike most parks, where animals roam across open ranges, Ngorongoro’s steep 600m walls keep a self-contained ecosystem in place year-round. That makes it one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to spot the Big Five, including the crater’s famously large-maned black lions and a small, closely protected population of black rhino. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the Maasai people, who still graze their cattle across the wider Conservation Area alongside the wildlife.

Getting to Ngorongoro
Most travellers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, then continue by road to Arusha (around 90 minutes) before driving on to Ngorongoro, roughly 3 to 4 hours further, often combined with a stop at Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Karatu, along the way.
Ngorongoro is commonly paired with the Serengeti as part of the classic Northern Circuit, with many guests descending into the crater for a day or two of game viewing before continuing north or south to their next camp.
